Why Diljit Dosanjh’s Satluj got taken down days days OTT release? What exactly happened?

Diljit Dosanjh's film title kept changing and it was later removed from streaming because its story on Jaswant Singh Khalra’s life and Punjab’s dark past reportedly ran into censorship issues. Read on.

Diljit Dosanjh’s long-delayed film, originally known as Punjab 95, ran into trouble with India’s censor board because of its political and historical subject matter. The film is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose work exposed disappearances during Punjab’s insurgency years, and that subject led to a prolonged dispute over cuts, edits and even the title. The board reportedly demanded 21 cuts and a name change before certification, which the makers resisted.

Why was the name changed?

The title changed more than once because the makers could not secure approval for the original name, Ghallughara, and later the censorship process pushed the film toward the title Punjab 95. After years of delay, the film finally arrived on streaming as Satluj, with Honey Trehan saying the earlier titles could not be retained. He also made it clear that the team refused to release a compromised version.

Why was it removed?

Even after finally releasing on ZEE5 Global, the film was reportedly taken down from the platform in India shortly after it began streaming. That sudden removal sparked fresh discussion about censorship, political pressure and the unresolved conflict surrounding the film’s content. The film had already faced heavy delays, a withdrawn festival premiere, and years of uncertainty before its release.

What was Diljit’s reaction?

Diljit responded to the controversy with a pointed social-media post that read, “Censored before release?” He also said he had watched the film and hinted that “the real fight may just be starting,” signalling his frustration with the long battle over the project. Later, he explained that he chose the role because of Jaswant Singh Khalra’s martyrdom and his contribution to humanity, calling it a responsibility to portray the character truthfully and respectfully.

What does the film stand for?

Trehan has said that Satluj is now available in its complete form, without cuts or compromises, and that this was only possible because the producers and Diljit stood firm on the film’s integrity. The makers view it as a story about courage, resilience and justice, not just a political drama. For South Asian audiences, especially those outside India, the film also carries the weight of memory and historical reckoning.

Why does the controversy matter?

The fight around this film is bigger than the release. It shows how Indian films that deal with state violence, political history, and uncomfortable truths can face years of obstacles before reaching audiences. In this case, the title change, censor demands, festival withdrawal, and removal from the platform have turned the film into a symbol of how difficult it can be for a socially charged story to survive intact.
