Awarapan 2 takes Emraan Hashmi back into a space that feels distinctly familiar — intense emotions, soulful music, love, loss and redemption. At a time when most big-screen entertainers are leaning heavily towards fast-paced action, the film chooses to tell a more emotional story, and that works in its favour.
Emraan plays Shivam Pandit, a man still carrying the weight of his past. His life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers a baby girl near his former girlfriend Aaliyah's grave. He takes responsibility for the child and eventually leaves her at an orphanage, naming her Aaliyah. Years later, when the girl becomes a victim of a child-trafficking racket, Shivam is pulled back into a world he thought he had left behind. Interpol seeks his help to infiltrate the gang and trace the missing children.
From here, the film moves through a series of twists, turns and revelations, with a particularly interesting turn at the interval that gives the second half an added push.
But Awarapan 2 is ultimately not just an action thriller. At its heart, it is about redemption — a broken man trying to make peace with his past and finding a reason to fight again. That emotional layer is what separates it from the usual fast-paced action entertainers.
The film also carries a strong old-school Bhatt camp flavour. There is an emphasis on emotion, empathy, relationships and music, which makes the film nostalgic without making it feel completely stuck in the past.
Emraan Hashmi fits naturally into this world. His screen presence brings back memories of the characters that made him such a defining face of the romantic and emotionally intense cinema of the 2000s. Disha Patani brings vulnerability to her character, while Puran Gabbi stands out with an unpredictable performance. Shabana Azmi adds gravitas whenever she appears.
And then there is the music. An Awarapan film simply cannot work without music playing an important role, and the soundtrack remains one of the film's biggest strengths. The songs complement the emotional journey rather than merely functioning as breaks between the action.
Produced by Vishesh Bhatt, directed by Nitin Kakkar and written by Bilal Siddiqi and Vishesh Bhatt, Awarapan 2 expands the world of the original while retaining its emotional soul. It is bigger in scale, has more action and takes the story into a more international thriller space, but the heart of the film remains Shivam Pandit and his journey towards redemption. It may not have the rawness or simplicity of the 2007 original, but the combination of Emraan Hashmi's nostalgia, engaging screenplay, emotional core, twists, empathy and great music makes Awarapan 2 a nice weekend film and a welcome throwback to an era of Hindi cinema that knew how to make audiences feel.
Verdict: A nostalgic, emotional and engaging return for Shivam Pandit — not just about revenge or action, but ultimately about redemption.
